MURFREESBORO - The softball team improved to 20-24 overall and 11-1 at home after beating Meredith College 10-8 and 12-4 in a doubleheader this afternoon. The Hawks overcame a 6-0 deficit in the first game to pick up their 19th win of the year but run-ruled the Angels in game two.
Melissa Woodrum pitched the first inning of the first game, giving up six runs in eight batters faced. The Angels protected their 6-0 lead until the bottom of the 3rd inning when Chowan exploded for four runs on five hits. Trailing 7-4 in the 4th, Tricia Gorman pulled the Hawks within one run after belting a two-run homer to left center field. Chowan went on to score four more runs over their next two at-bats to take the win 10-8. Krystle Thomas came in for relief of Woodrum on the mound after one inning. Thomas gave up two runs and struck out three for her 6th win of the season.
Game two was all Chowan as they pounded out a season-high 13 hits over five innings. Six Hawks' had multiple hit games with Kaytee McLaughlin going 2-5 with three RBI. Woodrum was 2-3 with two RBI in the 12-4 win. McLaughlin was 5-8 on the day with four RBI and three runs scored. Thomas picked up the win and Woodrum was credited with a save.
The Hawks will travel to Barton College on Sunday, April 6th in their next game. That game was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved.
