Hawks Win Four Straight with Sweep of VSU

MURFREESBORO - The baseball team ran their overall record to 28-17 after a doubleheader sweep of Virginia State University on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks made it four straight wins over the weekend after their sweep of NC Central on Saturday. Saturday's wins marked the program's most-ever wins as a member of the DII ranks.

Chowan won game one with a final score fo 15-2 behind the pitching of BJ Byerly. Byerly reached 8-1 on the mound after tossing a complete game, scattering five hits and two runs. He also struck out six batters in the win. The Hawks pounded out 13 hits in the win with David Hughes and Zack Beasley getting two hits each. PJ Sadler was 1-3 with a triple and four RBI. Sadler and Hughes are now tied as season record holders for triples in a season at seven each.

Chowan won game two 7-5 with John Morris getting the win on the mound. Morris pitched five innings, giving up four hits and two runs. Brandon Hamlett picked up the save as he tossed the final two innings, giving up two hits and no runs.

Hughes continued to pace the Hawks in game two with three hits while Billy Walling was 2-4 with one RBI. Hamlett ended the day 1-3 with two runs batted in.

The Hawks will travel to Newport News Apprentice on Tuesday in their next outing.
