Softball Takes Two from Virginia State

MURFREESBORO - The Hawks picked up two wins today over Virginia State University , moving them to 18-24 on the season. The Hawks won game one 4-3 and game two 1-0. Today's doubleheader wins gives the team a 9-1 home season record.

The Hawks scored three runs to open the game after Kaytee McLaughlin led off with a single, stole second base, and was knocked in on a double by Tricia Gorman. Gorman later scored after advancing on an error by VSU and then stole home. Brooke Owen, who reached on an error, scored after Jenna Lassiter singled to centerfield.

VSU scored two runs in their ensuing at bat after an Ashley Houp two run homer to cut Chowan's lead to 3-2. Mindy Byrd singled in Allie Hunka in the bottom of the second to give Chowan their fourth run. The Hawks would hold VSU off for the 4-3 win. Both teams tallied six hits with Lassiter getting the only multiple hit game for Chowan after going 2-3 with one RBI. Shellie Wimpey pitched the complete game for the win after giving up six hits and striking out five batters.

Krystle Thomas pitched the win in game two after giving up four hits and no runs. The Hawks were held to one hit in the game. The Hawks scored in the bottom of the 3rd inning on an error by VSU to take the eventual 1-0 win.

Chowan will play their final home game of 2008 tomorrow afternoon as Meredith College comes to town for a 2:00p.m. game.
