Hawks Split at North Carolina Wesleyan

Woodrum drove in the winning run and notched a save

ROCKY MOUNT - The softball team split a twinbill at North Carolina Wesleyan College this afternoon. Chowan dropped the first game 3-2 but bounced back to win the second game 5-4. Today's split moves Chowan to 21-27 on the year.

NC Wesleyan scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning but couldn't cut the deficit. The Hawks scored runs in the 4th and the 7th on four hits. Tricia Gorman had the team's only multiple hit game at 2-3 with one RBI. Shellie Wimpey takes the loss on the mound after throwing three innings, striking out one batter and giving up three earned runs. Melissa Woodrum closed the game out with three innings pitched, giving up one hit.

The Hawks scored a run in the top of the 8th inning and then shut out the Bishops in their attempt to score in international play. With Jenna Lassiter placed on second base, Brooke Owen singled her over to third. Melissa Woodrum drove in Lassiter with a single to give Chowan a 5-4 win and eventual win.

Wimpey tossed seven innings, giving up seven hits and four runs. Woodrum threw the last inning to notch the save. She retired all three batters faced in the bottom of the 8th inning.

Chowan will travel to Catawba College on Monday.
