HOME OF THE CHOWAN UNIVERSITY HAWKS

Softball Splits, Ends Skid

MURFREESBORO - The softball team ended their eleven-game losing streak with a doubleheader split with Bloomfield College (NJ) this afternoon. Bloomfield edged the Hawks 3-2 but bounced back to win the nightcap 2-1. Tricia Gorman hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the 6th inning to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead and help propel them to the victory.

After holding a 1-0 lead for five innings, the Hawks gave up three runs to Bloomfield in the top of the sixth inning. In their final at-bat the Hawks attempted a comeback but fell short. Megan Bass led off the inning with a wallk and then stole second base. Kaytee McLaughlin moved Bass to third on a ground ball out to the left side of the field. Mindy Byrd came to the plate with two outs and put the ball in play. Bass scored on Byrd's dropped fly ball and Byrd advanced to second on the error. The Hawks fell just short of their comeback as Jenna Lassiter grounded out to the pitcher for the final out of the inning.

Chowan was held to four hits in the game with Gorman going 1-2 at the plate with one RBI. Bass was 1-2 with one run scored. Shellie Wimpey picked up the loss after tossing six innings, scattering five hits, striking out five batters, and giving up three runs, two of which were earned.

Gorman's homerun in the 6th inning of the second game was all the Hawks needed to pull of their 10th win of the season. Krystle Thomas pitched in the 2-1 game, holding BC to two hits and one run. Gorman was 2-2 at the plate and accounted for both runs batted in. Kaytee McLaughlin was 2-2 with one run scored.
