SAVANNAH - The softball team continued their struggles at the 2008 SCAD Smash Hit Tournament today with two losses. Chowan played Saint Francis University (Indiana) in the first game of the day where they fell 3-2. They faced off against West Chester in their second game where they fell with a final score of 11-3.
Chowan scored two runs in the top of the 7th inning in a comeback attempt against SFU. They entered the inning down 3-0 but Allie Hunka doubled and advanced to third on an infield out in the next at-bat. Hunka scored the Hawks first run of the game on a wild pitch. Mindy Byrd singled and was scored by Tricia Gorman's single to cut the SFU lead to just one run. Their comeback attempt was cut short and the Hawks fell with the eventual 3-2 score. Gorman ended the game 2-4 with one RBI while Melissa Woodrum was also 2-4 at the plate. Shellie Wimpey pitched the loss after giving up eight hits through six innings and three earned runs. She also struck out five batters.
The Hawks were held to five hits in the 11-3 loss to West Chester. Wimpey once again took the mound where she gave up 10 hits and 11 runs through 5.2 innings of work. Gorman was 1-1 with one RBI.
Chowan will wrap up their play at SCAD tomorrow with two games, both against West Chester University. They will return home on Sunday for a doubleheader with Bloomfield College at 11:00a.m.
