MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University Women's Basketball team fell to 6-17 on the season after losing 56-53 to St. Augustine's.
Neither the Hawks nor St. Augustine's got off to a great start. Neither team scored until 3 minutes into the game. After that the Hawks were able to pick up some momentum and build a 10 point lead mid-way through the first half. However, St. Augustine's kept chipping away until they finally took the lead 25-24 into halftime.
The second half started out much like the first, as both teams battled up and down the court exchanging baskets. St. Augustine's started to pull away mid way through the second half and was able to build a commanding double digit lead with just 6 minutes left. Then the Hawks Ashley Banks started Chowan's comeback by hitting a 3 to pull the Hawks within 7. After another Hawks basket, Banks drove the lane hard, made her lay-up and picked up a foul. After missing her free throw the Hawks were down by just 1. St. Augustine's next possession was ended after a missed shot and a rebound by the Hawks AJ O'Banion. Then, as O'Banion turned to pass the ball the Falcons Kelley Bural snuck behind Najah Harris and stole the ball, Bural converted the lay-up which propelled the Falcons to a 56-53 win.
The Hawks were led by AJ O'Banion who had 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Brittany Nicholson chipped in 10 points for the Hawks.
