MURFREESBORO - The baseball team moved to 7-3 overall after a doubleheader sweep of Elizabeth City State this afternoon. The Hawks won with scores of 17-3 and 13-9. The Vikings fall to 3-2 after today's losses.
The Hawks jumped out to an early lead in the game, scoring eight runs in their first at-bat. They followed the first inning up with eight more runs over their next two at-bats. Justin Hollingsworth went 3-3 with three runs scored and two RBI as the Hawks pounded out 11 hits. Joey Ryder was 2-4 with three RBI and a triple. Brandon Hamlett picked up his first win of the season and moves to 1-1 overall. He struck out five in five innings of work. Steve Humprey pitched the final two innings of the game, giving up two hits and striking out two batters.
After jumping out to a 9-0 lead in the nightcap, ECSU battled back to tie the game over the last three innings. David Hughes hit a bases loaded triple to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth and then stole home to give Chowan the eventual 13-9 win. Hughes ended the game 4-5 with two runs scored and four RBI. Hollingsworth had two hits and four RBI while Ryder stayed hot, going 3-3 with two runs scored. BJ Byerly started the game, throwing four innings and giving up five runs while striking out five batters. Bylerly wouldn't get the decision though as three pitchers threw in relief with Mark Peterson getting the win in 2/3 innings worked.
Chowan will host Southern Virginia University in a doubleheader tomorrow at 1:00pm.
