Hawks Battle with Barton but Fall

MURFREESBORO - The men's basketball team fell to 0-2 on the year after battling with Barton College this evening in their home season debut at the Helms Center. The Hawks fell with a final score of 74-67 in a game that featured four ties and two lead changes in the final eight minutes of play.

The Hawks got down by 10 points with about five minutes to go in the first period but scored three buckets and landed two free throws to help cut into the Barton lead. Barton edged out the first half of play 38-35.

The Hawks found themselves down by nine points in the second period but stormed back to knot the game at 55-55 when Mark Brown scored a basket down low after a key rebound. Layth Mansour gave Chowan a 61-59 lead with just over three minutes to play in the game for Chowan's second lead of the second half. However Barton grabbed a few offensive boards that helped burn up the clock. Chowan was forced to foul where Barton pulled away at the foul line. Barton's David King iced the game with a layup on a fast break with :07 ticks on the clock.

Chowan shot 46% (26-57) from the floor and got 19 points out of Jaleel Nelson. Nelson was 7-9 from the field and grabbed five boards and two blocks. Aaron Scott came off the bench to chip in 11 points. Mansour finished up with eight points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Chris Kenon had nine points in the loss.

For Barton LJ Dunn had a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds while Jaren Haley scored 10 points.

Chowan falls to 0-2 on the year while Barton moves to 1-1. The Hawks will travel to Minnesota State for the MSU/Pepsi Classic which will take place Friday and Saturday.
