Box Scores vs. Mars Hill
MARS HILL - The women's basketball team fell in a dramatic comeback by Mars Hill this afternoon in their final game of the Carolina First/Mars Hill Classic. Chowan went on a 12-0 run to open the game and held on to a narrow 26-25 lead at halftime. After a dramatic comeback by Mars Hill, led by Brittani Young, the Hawks fell with a final score of 63-56.Young poured in 21 points in the game, 11 of which came in the second half.
The Hawks jumped out to a 12-0 early lead and even held a 12 point margin with just under ten to play in the first half. Mars Hill knotted the game at 23-23 with 1:12 before halftime. Alicia McMorris busted the tie when she nailed a three pointer for a 26-23 lead. Two foul shots by Young brought Mars Hill to within one point of the Hawks at halftime.
The two teams exchanged baskets for most of the second period. Mars Hill's Shamia Terry scored on a fast break to tie the game at 45-45 with 7:46 to play. On the Hawks ensuing possession Maddie Cummings hit from three point land to pull ahead 48-45. Terry gave Mars Hill the lead back after taking a Chowan pass and heading down court where she laid the ball in the hoop for a 52-50 lead. After almost a two minute dry spell Chowan's Ransheda Jennings tied the game at 52-52 on a fast break lay up. Chowan scored back-to-back buckets by Acquanette Simmons and Najah Harris to take a 56-52 lead with 2:26 to go. And those buckets would be their final goals of the game as Young went to work on the other end of the court. Young scored the final 11 points of the game to lead Mars Hill to a 63-56 win.
For Chowan Cummings had another stellar outing with 12 points on a 5-8 shooting performance. Simmons dropped 10 points in the game after hitting 5-7 from the floor. AJ O'Banion had eight points, six boards, and four assists in the loss.
The Hawks drop to 0-2 after the game while Mars Hill improves their record to 2-0. Chowan will hit the court again on Wednesday, November 19th as they travel to Mount Olive College for a 7:00pm tip.
