Box Scores vs. Newberry
MARS HILL - The women's basketball team fell short in their season opener at the Carolina-First Mars Hill Classic this evening against Newberry College. The Hawks dropped the game 71-57, but scored 38 second half points in a late come back effort.
Chowan trailed 33-19 at the half and got down by as many as 27 points in the second period. Led by two freshmen, the Hawks posted 38 second half points in a last ditch effort to keep the game close. Maddie Cummings and Ransheda Jennings each dropped 13 points in the game to lead the Hawks offensive attack. Cummings hit 3-8 from beyond the three-point arch while Jennings hit 5-6 from the field. Alicia McMorris notched eight points in the loss and was 2-5 from three point land.
The Hawks fell just short under the boards as they grabbed 32 team rebounds to Newberry's 33 rebounds. They edged Newberry in field goal percentage as the Hawks hit at 48% (21-44) on the night.
Four of Newberry's players scored in double-digits with Laura Marquardt leading the way with 17 points.
The Hawks will play against the host-team, Mars Hill, tomorrow afternoon at 4:00pm.
