BUIES CREEK - The men's basketball team opened the 2008-09 season with a 79-64 loss at Campbell University. Chowan started the game with three quick three pointers on their first three possessions to take an early 9-4 lead over the DI Campbell Camels. But turnovers plagued the Hawks in the first half, giving it up 18 times to go the locker room at halftime 41-29.
Campbell pulled away in the second half after hitting 70% from the field, including 3-4 from the three point arch. Chowan gave up the ball 28 times in the game and Campbell picked up 36 of their 79 points off those turnovers. The Hawks defense pushed Campbell to turn the ball over 23 times but they couldn't convert on the offensive end, hitting 43% (22-51) from the field and 35% (6-17) from beyond the arch.
Chowan's Layth Mansour led the Hawks offensive attack with 14 points. He also had a team-high eight boards in 37 minutes on the court. Aaron Scott came off the bench to net 13 points and dish out three assists. Charles Rhodes knocked down three, three-pointers for nine points while both Jaleel Nelson and Mark Brown had nine points in the game.
For Campbell Jonathan Rodriquez netted a game-high 30 points. The Hawks will return to action on Tuesday night as they host Barton College in the Helms Center. Tip off is slated for 7:30pm. Campbell will travel to East Carolina on Tuesday in their next hard court match up.
