FSU's Balanced Attack Helped Down Hawks

FAYETTEVILLE - Fayetteville State used a balanced offensive attack to help lift them over the Hawks 60-21 in CIAA Western Division action this evening. The Broncos improve to 5-1 and 3-0 in the CIAA after the win while Chowan falls to 1-5 and 0-4 in the CIAA.

FSU gained 211 yards on the ground and 213 yards through the air in the win while shutting down the Hawks rushing game. Chowan had 258 yards of total offense with 220 yards coming through the air and just 38 yards on the ground.

The Hawks were held scoreless until the third quarter when they got on the board after CJ Westler connected with James Fox for a four-yard touchdown strike. Cory Cline made good on the point after to make the score 40-7 at the nine minute mark of the third quarter. Westler would connect again with Fox for a 36-yard strike for their second score of the game at the nine minute mark of the four quarter. Cline made the extra point to give Chowan 14 points to FSU's 47. The Hawks scored their final touchdown on their last possession of the game when Westler found Brandon Myrick for a 26-yard score with :50 to play in the game. The Hawks would eventually fall with the final score of 60-21.

Westler tossed three touchdowns in the game and connected on 17 of 39 passes for 220 yards. He was also picked off three times in the game. Westler ran his season touchdown total to 11 after tonight's game.

Eddie Coard caught seven passes for 116 yards while Fox had two touchdowns and 54 yards on four catches. JJ Spates paced the ground attack with 44 yards on 13 carries. Defensively Greg Palmer had 11 tackles, four for a loss and Brendon Scott had 10 tackles.

The Hawks will host their final home game of the season on Saturday, October 11th when they host Livingstone College at 6:00pm.
