CHARLOTTE - Johnson C. Smith University used 21 third quarter points to help them run past the Hawks with a final score of 51-36. After trailing 23-14 at the half the Hawks surrendered three scores to put them in the hole 44-21 after three quarters of play. Despite putting up 15 fourth quarter points, the Hawks were not able to overcome the third quarter scoring of the Golden Bulls and picked up their 7th loss of the season.
Both teams were dead even record wise heading into the match up at 2-6 overall and 1-5 in league play but it was JC Smith who would come away with the win today.
The Golden Bulls hit paydirt three times before Chowan answered with a score of their own. Capping off a 72 yard drive, senior James Fox caught a two-yard touchdown pass from CJ Westler to make the score 20-7. Fox and Westler connected again for a six-yard strike on their last possession of the 3rd quarter. Cline made good on his second point after attempt of the day to cut JC Smith's lead to 23-14 at the half.
Trailing 44-21 heading into the final quarter of the game, Chowan posted 15 points, starting with their first possession of the quarter. Eddie Coard caught a nine yard pass from Westler, giving Westler his third TD toss of the game. JJ Spates converted the two-point conversion to cut the lead to 44-29. Fox broke single game record with four reception touchdown's in a game with his fourth score of the game on the Hawks' final possession of the game. The score came too late as the Hawks fell with a final score of 51-36.
Westler paced the Hawks on the ground with 65 yards on six carries while he also threw for 308 yards and five touchdowns. Westler's five touchdowns in a single game is a new single game record.
Fox ended the game with 123 yards on eight catches while JJ Spates had seven catches for 94 yards. Marcus Johnson paced the Hawks with nine tackles, eight of which were solo tackles. Phil Koch, Jeremy Bednarz-Gray, and Jomo Brown all had seven tackles in the loss.
The Hawks will wrap up the 2008 season next week at St. Augustine's College. Kick off is slated for 4:00pm. The game will be played at Raleigh's Broughton High School.
