DURHAM - The football team dropped to 2-6 overall and 1-5 in the CIAA after suffering a 68-13 loss to Shaw University this evening. The Bears amassed 653 yards of offense and held Chowan to 282 yards of offense on 72 plays.
Shaw jumped out to a 31-0 lead before the Hawks could get on the board. CJ Westler, the CIAA's top passer, capped off an eight-play, 68 yard drive with a three yard scamper into the endzone. Westler accounted for two scores on the day, one through the air and one on the ground. Westler upped his season touchdown total to 14 after the loss. Cory Cline made the point after attempt to give Chowan seven points but Shaw took a 34-7 lead into halftime.
The Bears ran back the opening third quarter kick off for an 86 yard score to get up on the Hawks 40-7. It was all Bears in this game but the Hawks managed to hit the paydirt one time in the second half when Westler hooked up with Ryan Bouldin for a three yard score at the 6:20 mark of the third quarter.
Westler connected with the Hawks top receiver, Eddie Coard, nine times in the game. Coard had 123 yards receiving, his third game this season where he topped 100 yards receiving. Freshman JJ Spates led the Hawks ground attack with 61 yards on six carries. He also caught two passes for 29 yards.
Defensively Jeremy Bednarz-Gray had a game-high 10 tackles and one sack. After tonight's win for Shaw, they remain in a tie with Fayetteville State in the CIAA's Western Division at 5-1 each. The Hawks and JC Smith are tied for last place in the division at 1-5. The Hawks will travel to JC Smith next Saturday for a 1:00pm kick off. They will wrap up the season at Saint Augustine's on November 1st.
