Hawks Win First-Ever CIAA Game over Livingstone

MURFREESBORO - Chowan picked up their first-ever CIAA win over Livingstone in Western Division action at Garrison Stadium this evening. The Hawks rolled to a 41-20 win over the Blue Bears in the most balanced offensive attack of the season. Chowan gained a season high 211 yards on the ground and were steady at 205 yards through the air. The Chowan defense caused six turnovers in the game and held Livingstone to 216 yards of total offense.

The Hawks scored 28 first half points and shut Livingstone's offense down as they gained just 46 first half yards. On their first possession Chowan drove 50 yards down field on six plays to score when CJ Westler hit Kimberry Lubin in the back of the endzone from six yards out. The Hawks second score of the game came in the second quarter. Eddie Coard capped off an 88 yard drive with a 23 yard strike from Westler. Greg Palmer picked up a fumbled pass on the Blue Bears next possession and rushed it in for a defensive score from 27 yards out to give the Hawks two quick scores for a 21-0 lead. Westler scrambled six yards to score at the 3:56 mark of the 2nd quarter to give the Hawks a 28-0 lead at the half.

Livingstone came out of locker room at halftime and scored first when Jamel Moore punched it in from the two yard line. Piscitello's point after was blocked, giving Chowan a 28-6 lead. Cory Cline rounded out the Hawks scoring in the 3rd quarter with a 27 yard field goal at the 4:59 mark of the game. Cline would score again in the 4th quarter when he hit another 27 yard field goal to spread Chowan's lead to 34-12. JJ Spates picked up the Hawks final touchdown after rushing five yards to the endzone with just over two minutes to go in the game.

Spates paced the Hawks' ground attack with 90 yards on 14 carries. Spruce Lee gained 88 yards on 12 carries while Brandon Myrick had 34 yards on six carries. Westler ended the game with 17 completed passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns. Westler becomes the new record holder for passes in a season with 13 after tonight's win. Westler hooked up wtih Eddie Coard seven times for 93 yards and one touchdown strike. Albert Floyd had three catches and 34 yards.

Defensively, Jeremy Bednarz-Gray posted 10 tackles, six of which were solo tackles. He also had two sacks for a loss of 24 yards, two forced fumbles, one quarterback hurry, and one pass break up. Palmer ended the game with seven tackles, two sacks, one fumble recovery with a 27 yard touchdown run, and one quarterback hurry.

The Hawks will travel to Shaw University in their next match up. They improve to 2-5 on the year and 1-4 on the CIAA. Livingstone picks up their first CIAA loss and fall to 3-4 overall and 3-1 in the CIAA.
