MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University men's basketball team reached 8-11 on the season after beating Newport News Apprentice School 85-74 on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks took command of the game from the start.  Both teams played very physical, each team recorded 26 fouls in today's game.  Chowan was able to pull away from the Builders mid-way through the first half with strong play from Raul Tutelea and Jaleel Nelson.  The Hawks shot 57% from the floor and from the 3-point line in the first half which enabled the Hawks to take a 36-24 lead into halftime.

The Hawks continued their hot shooting in the second half as the Hawks were able to stretch their lead to as much as 17 in the second half.  The Builders were unable to mount a substantial run due to the Hawks good defense and Chowan being able to hit key shots to slow the Builders momentum.

The Hawks shot 59% from the floor in the second half while the Builders were only able to shoot 42% from the floor. 

The Hawks gave up two uncontested three pointers in the closing seconds of the game which enabled the Builders to pull to within 11.  The Hawks hung on, however, to win, 85-74.

Newport News was led by Eric Joe who had 26 points and 12 rebounds.  The Builders Antoine Paige also netted 17 points.

The Hawks were led by Raul Tutelea who was one rebound shy of a double-double accumulating 25 points and 9 rebounds.  The Hawks Jaleel Nelson also turned in 23 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists.

The Hawks travel to Mars Hill on January 28th for a 7:00 PM tip-off.
