MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University mens basketball team dropped to 7-11 on the season after falling to Elizabeth City State University 78-67.

The Hawks fed off the packed Helms Center crowd to begin the game.  The Hawks were able to move the ball up and down the court on the Vikings.  The Hawks shot 52% from the floor in the first half which let the Hawks build a 10 point lead on the Vikings mid way through the first half.  The Hawks were unable to sustain the lead as the Vikings kept chipping away on the Hawks lead.  The Vikings were able to lower the Hawks lead to 5 points going into the half with Chowan leading 35-30.

The Vikings came out on fire to begin the second half as Matt Nowlin and Brian West hit back to back three pointers which put the Vikings right back in the game.  From there the Hawks and Vikings battled it out by exchanging buckets and leads.  The Vikings were able to start pulling away mid way through the second half as their 3-point shots kept falling.

The Vikings Matt Nowlin was able to hit 6 three pointers for ECSU, with 5 coming in the second half.  The Hawks continued to battle as they got the lead into single digits several times in the second half.  The Hawks were never able to make a substantial run.  This was due in part to the Vikings shooting 64% from 3-point land and 69% from the floor in the second half.  The Hawks battled until the final buzzer but they were unable to overcome the lead the Vikings had built.  ECSU went on to win 78-67.

The Vikings were led by Matt Nowlin and Brian West who both went for 18 points.  Olajuwon Johnson also netted 12 points for the Vikings.

The Hawks were led by Chris Kenon who had 13 points and 5 assists.  Raul Tutelea also chipped in 11 points and 5 rebounds while Jaleel Nelson also netted 11 points and 4 rebounds for the Hawks.

The Hawks next action is on January 26th as Newport News Apprentice comes into the Helms Center for a 2:00 PM tip-off.
