MURFREESBORO - Despite having five players score in double-figures, the home standing Hawks fell in a closely fought match to Catawba College with a final score of 86-77. Chowan out shot the Indians from the floor, hitting 49% of their shots taken while also winning the battle underneath the boards with 42 rebounds. However, Catawba hit some key three-pointers down the stretch to help propel them to the victory in the end.
After Catawba took a 37-33 lead into halftime the Hawks kept the game close in the second period, making the Indians fight for their every basket. With just under eight minutes to play in the game, Chowan's Jaleel Nelson cut the lead to 62-60 after following a missed shot with a tip-in. Catawba would score on their ensuing possession but freshman Charles Rhodes drilled a baseline three pointer to keep the Hawks within striking distance at 65-62 with 7:10 to play in the game. Catawba came up big from beyond the three point arch on their next two possessions with back-to-back threes to get on top of the Hawks 71-63. The Indians extended their lead to as many as 11 points over the next six minutes before Aaron Scott hit a three pointer with 1:50 to play and pull his team within six points at 79-73. The Indians would pull away in the final minute to get the 86-77 win.
Five Hawks scored in double figures with Lando Morrison and Layth Mansour netting a team-high 14 points. Morrison also had four boards and was 4-5 from the floor. Mansour had eight rebounds in the game. Chris Kenon and Rhodes each netted 12 points and hit two three pointers each in the game while Scott chipped in ten points in the loss.
For Catawba, Antonio Houston led all scorers with 20 points and was 6-10 from three point land. Rob Fields closely followed Houston with 19 points of his own.
Chowan will hit the hardcourt again on Saturday when they host Shaw University in a 7:00pm tip off.
