MURFREESBORO-  The Chowan University women's basketball team dropped to 5-13 on the season after losing 47-38 to the University of The District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon.

Both teams started off cold in the first half, each team scored just 16 points.  The Hawks, however, were able to build a lead as large as 10 in the first half until the Firebirds were able to creep back to tie the game by halftime.  Chowan shot just 33% from the floor in the first half while UDC was only able to shoot 17% from the floor in the first half.

UDC came out of halftime on fire and was able to gain control of the game.  UDC led by as many as 18 at one point in the second half.  Chowan did not go away however.  The Hawks were able to settle down and started to play stellar defense mid way through the second half.  The Firebirds lead was just too much to overcome.  The Hawks cut the lead to as small as 6, but every time the Hawks threatened to make a run UDC was able to come back down the court and score to stop the Hawks momentum.

Both teams shot much better in the second half.  Chowan shot 44% from the floor while UDC was able to shoot 58% from the floor.  Both teams had turnover problems as Chowan had 28 and UDC had 14.

The Firebirds were led by Lillian McGill who had 13 points and 3 rebounds.  Tiffany Church also pitched in 9 points and 3 rebounds for the Firebirds.

Chowan was led by Brittany Nicholson who had 15 points and 5 rebounds while Keyon Sellers also had 10 points and 4 rebounds for the Hawks.

The Hawks return to action on January 21st at the Helms Center as West Virginia Tech comes to town for a 6:00 PM tip-off.
