NEWPORT NEWS, VA- The Chowan University womens basketball team picked up their 5th win of the season on Wednesday by beating The Builders from Newport News Apprentice 59-45.

The Hawks were able to build a big lead in the first half and play even in the second half in order to pull away.  The Hawks only shot 39% from the field in the first half but Newport News only shot 19% from the field.  The Hawks were able to capitalize on the Builders poor shooting by stretching their lead to 28-14 at halftime.

The second half was much more competitive as both teams scored 31 points in the second half.  The teams shot much better from the field as Chowan shot 43% and the Builders shot 41%.  However, the big lead the Hawks were able to build in the first half was all the Hawks needed to cruise to a victory.

The Builders were led by Rashann Lewter who scored 14 points and had 6 assists.  Tyechia Cooke also helped the Builders by scoring 11 points and pulling down 8 rebounds.

The Hawks were led by a pair of top scorers.  AJ O'Banion had 12 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 blocks.  Brittany Nicholson also had 12 points, 6 rebounds, and dished out 4 assists.  The Hawks were also paced by Jashonda Crawford who netted 9 points for the Hawks.

The Hawks next game is on Saturday January 19th when the Hawks welcome the University of D.C. into the Helms Center, tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
