MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University women's basketball team improved to 4-12 on the season with a 64-55 win over North Carolina Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon.
The Hawks started off hot and never cooled off. The Hawks shot 52% from the floor in the first half. The Hawks and Battling Bishops struggled to gain an edge throughout the first half. The Hawks were able to build a lead as large as 7 in the first half. However, NC Wesleyan was able to crawl back into the game and take a 1 point lead until AJ O'Banion hit 2 free throws to close out the half and give the Hawks a 33-32 lead going into halftime.
The second half got off to a quick start with the Hawks being able to increase their lead. The Hawks never trailed in the second half and were able to build a lead as large as 12 in the second half. The Hawks kept up their hot shooting, the Hawks shot 46% from the field for the game. The Battling Bishops put together a few runs but were never able to carry their momentum into a full comeback. NC Wesleyan got within 8 at one point of the second half but never was able to get closer than that. Najah Harris hit key free throws down the stretch which propelled the Hawks to a 9 point win, 64-55.
The Battling Bishops were led by Nicole Williams who had 12 points and 4 assists. Desiree Driver also helped NC Wesleyan by netting 11 points and Essence Chambers also had 10 points for the Battling Bishops.
The Hawks were led by AJ O'Banion who had 19 points, 3 steals, 2 assists, and 9 rebounds. The Hawks Najah Harris also had a good game netting 16 points, 4 assists, 2 steals, and 6 rebounds. Keyon Sellers also chipped in 13 points for the Hawks.
The Hawks are off until January 16th when they travel to Newport News to play The Apprentice School at 6:00 PM.
