MURFREESBORO - Nelson Devalos' 29-yard field goal with :01 left on the clock in regulation helped to lift the visiting Tigers over Chowan 33-32 this afternoon. The Hawks dropped to 0-3 on the year after today's dramatic loss while Saint Pauls moves to 1-1.

Despsite a balanced attack offensively, the Hawks took the loss with 364 yards of total offense, their highest total of the season. Of those 364 yards, 235 of them came on the ground. Quarterback Josh Floyd rushed for 101 yards to lead the ground attack while Jake Thorne totaled 63 yards on 20 carries. The Hawks posted the most points they have scored since November 10th, 2001 in a 48-0 win over Averett University, with the 32 points scored this afternoon.

In the tale of two halves, Chowan took a 26-17 lead into halftime but Saint Pauls paced the second half with 16 points, while holding the Hawks to just six.

The Hawks broke the scoring open when at the 6:37 mark when Floyd ran 27 yards to paydirt on a quarterback keeper. Cory Cline made it 7-0 after spliting the uprights on the point after attempt. Devalos made the score 7-3 with a 39-yard field goal with 2:52 left in the first quarter. On their first possession of the second quarter, the Hawks called a fake field goal play where Cline took the snap and ran 20 yards to the endzone. The point after attempt failed to give Chowan a 13-3 lead at the 13:58 mark of the second quarter. Jean Dessein connected with Saadiq Morris on a 54-yard paydirt score just three minutes later to cut the Hawks' lead to 13-10 (Devalos PAT good).

The Hawks scored consecutively in the sixth minute after Thorne had a seven yard score (Cline PAT good) and Aaron Hawkins took one of his three interceptions on the day back for 37 yards to paydirt (Cline PAT failed). These scores gave Chowan a 26-10 lead with just over six minutes to play before halftime. Dessein and Morris hooked up again, this time for 65 yards to cut into the Hawks' lead 26-17 (Devalos PAT good). 

Chowan drove the field just prior to the halftime period but failed to punch it in from the one-yard line but still took at 26-17 lead into halftime. The second half went to the Tigers offensively as they outscored the Hawks 16-6, with Devalos' kick being the game-winner.

For Chowan, Floyd threw for 129 yards on nine completions while also running for 101 yards and one touchdown. Louis Williams had three catches for 71 yards while Thorne caught three balls for 25 yards to go with his 63 yards on the ground.

Defensively cornerback Aaron Hawkins had three interceptions, one of which he returned for a 27 yard score. Hawkins also led the team in tackles with nine total and four pass break ups. Jomo Brown and Gabe White each had seven tackles while linemen Kjell Cordero and Melvin Rodgers each had four tackles for a loss.

The Hawks will host Methodist College Saturday, September 15th at 1:00 p.m. in their next match up.
