MURFREESBORO - Catawba College rolled by homestanding Chowan 55-7 in the season opener for the 2007 campaign. Catawba gained 443 yards of total offense while holding Chowan to 226 yards of offense on 63 plays.
The Hawks started the game with an opening drive score when Josh Floyd connected with wide receiver James Fox (pictured above) who beat Catawba's defensive backfield and scampered 54 yards to paydirt. Sophomore Cory Cline split the uprights to get the Hawks on top of the Indians 7-0. Catawba answered the Hawks opening drive score with an opening drive score of their own. George Bell set up the Indians in Hawks territory after returning Cline's kick off 59 yards. Bell went on to cap off the drive with a one-yard touchdown run. Cory Darnell made good on the point after attempt to tie the game at 7-7 with 11:10 to play in the first period.
After Chowan's opening drive score, Catawba shut down the Hawks offense while going on to score 48 unanswered points in route to a 55-7 win over the homestanding Hawks.
Quarterback Josh Floyd connected on 10 of 19 passes for 140 yards while also running for 59 yards on 16 carries. Brandon Myrick hauled in three passes for 16 yards while Fox had two catches for 64 yards and a score. Defensively Jomo Brown had nine tackles with a sack while Leon Eason and Kimberry Lubin each tallied six tackles.
Bell led Catawba's ground attack with 89 yards on four carries. Quarterback Brad Roach was 9-13 for 146 yards in the game.
The Hawks will travel to Newberry College next week for a 1:30 p.m. kick off. Newberry is the returning SAC champion. Catawba will travel to Elizabeth City State University next week.
