MURFREESBORO - The Hawks opened their 2007-08 home season with a 57-49 win over Morris College (SC) this evening, moving them one game closer to .500 in their overall record. Chowan dominated the boards, grabbing 44 rebounds to Morris' 32. Thirteen of those 44 boards came on the offensive end of the court.
The first half featured ten ties, but Chowan took a narrow 28-25 lead after freshman Najah Harris nailed three-pointer with just seconds before the halftime period. The Hawks took control of the second half, never giving up their lead and got up by as many as eleven points. Morris made a last ditch effort to cut into the deficit but fell just short in the waining minutes of the game.
Chowan had two players score in double-figures with Keyon Sellers getting her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds. She also had three steals and two assists in the win. Joining her in double-figures was Harris who had 10 points. Ashley Banks had nine rebounds, two assists, and three steals in the Hawks' second win of the season.
For Morris, Tyneisha Eaddy had 21 points and eight boards while April Drakeford had 15 points and six rebounds.
Chowan moves to 2-3 overall while Morris falls to 2-7 on the year. The Hawks will travel to West Virginia on Friday for the West Virginia Tech/Small College Classic. They will face off against host team West Virginia Tech at 8:00pm on Friday.
