MURFREESBORO - John Thompson made a floating jumper in the lane with :01 remaining on the clock to help lift visiting Queens University (NC) over the homestanding Hawks in their season opener. The game featured 13 lead changed over the final four minutes, including a go-ahead basket by Chowan's Jaleel Nelson with 7.8 ticks on the clock.

After taking a 34-29 lead into halftime, the Hawks gave up their first lead of the game at the 4:06 mark of the second period. The two teams would exchange baskets over the remaining four minutes in regulation to set the table for the final :37 of the game. With his team trailing 70-69, Layth Mansour was fouled in the paint sending him to the line for a one and one situation. Mansour drained both ends of the free shots to give Chowan a 71-70 lead. Queens' Darnell Evans drove the lane on their next possession where he was fouled and sent to the line. He drained both free throws to give the Royals a 72-71 lead with :20 to play in the game.

After beating the full court press by the Royals, Chowan's Jaleel Nelson took charge with a decisive drive to the basket where he made good on a lay up to give the Hawks a 73-72 lead with 7.8 seconds to play. After a timeout to set the defense, the Hawks came out to keep the Royals from scoring. Reggie Hopkins drove the lane to attempt the game-winning shot for Queens but his lay up was blocked out of bounds by Chowan's Montino Williams. The block set up the Royals for an in bound pass. Andre Lockhart lobbed a pass in the paint from out of bounds to a jumping John Thompson who had just enough time to catch the pass and sink the shot at the buzzer for the 74-73 win over Chowan.

The Hawks saw three players score in double figures with Aaron Scott getting 24 points to lead all scorers. Nelson chipped in 13 points, grabbed five rebounds, and had two steals while Mansour had 10 points and six boards.

The Hawks shot 50% from the floor (26-52) and 54% from three point land (6-11). For Queens, Darnell Evans scored a team-high 18 points while Thompson and Reggie Hopkins each chipped in 16 points.

The Hawks fall to 0-1 after tonight's season opening loss. They will host Lees McRae College on Saturday at 4:00pm.
