NEWPORT NEWS, VA - It took four overtime sessions and erasing a twenty-eight point first half deficit to beat the Newport News Apprentice School Builders 61-55 this afternoon. The Hawks wrap up the season with today's dramatic win, scoring their highest point total in four-year school history. This is the second victory for the Hawks this season, both of which were won in overtime.

After a slow start which saw the Hawks get just one first down and head into the halftime period facing a twenty-eight point deficit, the Hawks chipped away at the Builders over the second half to pick up the dramatic win.

"We just kept fighting, kept climbing that hill. I am so proud of the players and the coaching staff. We left everything we had  on the field, and wow, the team really earned it today," stated Oyster Bowl Champion Coach Lorick Atkinson. "What a great way to go out this season. This win carries momentum into off season and on the recruiting trail."

Senior quarterback Josh Floyd was named MVP of Oyster Bowl after leading his team to the overtime win. After throwing two interceptions and seeing the offense get just one first down in the entire first half of play, Floyd came out in the second half with a mission. The Chesapeake native playing in his final game accounted for seven touchdowns, four through the air and three of his own rushing touchdowns. He finished the game with 228 yards passing on 10 of 24 completions and 78 yards on 18 carries.

"Josh came out a little flat in first half. But what a way to go out, he really played hard in the second half," stated Atkinson.

The Hawks scored five second half touchdowns while holding the Builders to one score to knot the game at 35-35 and force the overtime sessions. It took four sessions but Chowan's defense prevailed in the end to keep the Builders out of their endzone on the final possession of the fourth overtime.

Chowan gained 388 yards of offense in the game while giving up 434 yards on the defensive side. Floyd connected with wide receiver Louis Williams six times for 186 yards and two touchdown strikes while James Fox had 45 yards on three catches and one score.

Three Hawk defenders had eleven tackles in Kurt Carlson, Anthony Hinton, and Gabe White. Jomo Brown and Aaron Hawkins each had ten tackles in the win.

The Hawks wrap up the season at 2-9 while Apprentice ends the year at 4-6.
