BABSON PARK, FL - Webber International scored two second half touchdowns to help propel to them to a 31-17 late victory over the visiting Hawks this afternoon. The Warriors improve to 3-5 overall while Chowan falls to 1-8 on the year.
Webber International struck first in the gridiron match up as they drove 80 yards on eight plays to score with just over seven minutes to play in the first quarter. Down 7-0, Cory Cline nailed a 39-yard field goal on the ensuing possession to get the Hawks on the board.
Josh Floyd hooked up with James Fox for a three yard touchdown score at the four minute mark of the second quarter to take their only lead of the game. Cline split the uprights to take a 10-7 lead over the Warriors. Webber scored a field goal of their own on their next possession and intercepted a Floyd pass and ran it back 55 yards for a score to take a 17-10 lead into the half time period.
Trailing 31-10, the Hawks attempted a late comeback but it was thwarted by the Warriors defense. Josh Floyd gave the Hawks another score with just over 7:00 to play in the fourth quarter with a one-yard run to the endzone. Cline made good on the PAT to cut the lead to 31-17, but the damage was done and the Hawks wouldn't recover.
The Hawks had 358 yards of total offense and held the Warriors to 290 yards of offense. Floyd led the ground and air attacks with 193 yards passing and 74 yards rushing on 24 carries.
Defensively Jomo Brown had 14 tackles and two sacks while Kurl Carlson had 10 tackles. The Hawks have two games remaining on their schedule. They travel to Presbyterian next weekend and wrap up the season at the Oyster Bowl in Newport News on November 10th. Kick off for that game is at 1:00pm.
