FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Chowan fell to Methodist College 31-7 this afternoon in another turnover plagued outing. The Hawks had four total turnovers in this game, two of which came in the redzone when Chowan was knocking on the Monarchs' door for a score.
Methodist got on the board first in the game when Joseph Mathews scored from nine yards out with 2:31 to go in the first quarter. Patrick Larkin provided the extra point for the Monarchs to get a 7-0 lead over Chowan. Methodist added two more scores in the second quarter to take a 21-0 lead into the half.
After freshman quarterback Randy Gilbert started the game, Sam Williams came from the wide receivers position to take over the QB spot. Williams started the first two games for Chowan at quarterback but moved to wide receiver this week after suffering from shoulder soreness. On the Hawks opening possession of the third quarter Williams drove the Hawks downfield 78 yards on 15 plays but was picked off in the end zone from the Methodist two-yard line. Chowan got on the board at the 14:56 mark of the fourth quarter on a five-play, 96 yard drive. Williams completed a 37-yard play to Montino Williams followed by an 59-yard completion to receiver Jeremy Lee which took Chowan to the Monarch 1 yard line. Two plays later S. Williams scampered to the end zone on a one yard score. Cory Cline split the uprights to cut the Monarch lead to 24-7.
Chowan's defense forced Methodist to punt on their next possession, setting the Hawks up at their own 24 yard line. Williams led the Hawks downfield to the Monarchs 4 yard line and on second and goal with just over 9 minutes to play they fumbled, giving Methodist the ball on their own 15 yard line.
Methodist went on to score one more touchdown in the game to take the 31-7 win. Offensively Chowan gained a total of 272 yards on 65 plays. Methodist had 355 yards of offense on 52 plays. Sam Williams passed for 216 yards on 13 of 21 completions with 2 interceptions and 1 rushing touchdown. James Fox had 5 catches and 56 yards while Jeremy Lee caught two balls for 62 yards. Jack Ross led Chowan's ground attack with 60 yards on 16 carries.
Defensively Chowan was led by Ronnie Fields who had 9 tackles. Gabe White and Kyshawn Randall each had 8 tackles while Melvin Rodgers had 7 tackles.
The Hawks fall to 0-3 on the year while Methodist improves to 1-1 overall. Chowan hosts Tiffin University (OH) on the 23rd of September. Kick off is slated for 1:00pm at Garrison Stadium.
