About the Hawks Athletic Center

In 1977 the Hawks Athletic Center was constructed and became a new home to the volleyball team, as well as the men’s and women’s basketball programs. In the winter of 2015 the court was named after Coach Bob Burke, who coached at Chowan for over 20 years. The Hawks Athletic Center seats 2,000 people with stadium seating. Being able to convert into three full-size regulation basketball or volleyball courts, makes it comfortable to host tournaments and events. In 2009 the gymnasium underwent large-scale restorations which included the painting and resurfacing of the main court, painting of the interior walls, new wall padding, and the addition of a modernized p.a. and sound system. The Hawks Athletic Center will also serve as the competition home to the newly formed Acrobatics and Tumbling team.

The building also has indoor batting cages, a newly renovated swimming pool, a training room, and locker rooms to house both home and away teams. The indoor golf facility is also located inside the Hawks Athletic Center. In 2016, the former weight room was converted into a state-of-the-art fitness center for student-athletes to utilize while working with the certified strength and conditioning coach. The room features five professional power racks, free weights, various high-end cardio equipment apparatuses, and a multi-purpose turf room. There is ample square footage to ensure that student-athletes can prepare for competition and rehab injuries if needed.

The Hawks Athletic Center also serves as the office center for the athletic department administration and coaches for the sports of acrobatics and tumbling, men’s and women’s basketball, cheerleading, strength and conditioning, volleyball, and sports medicine.
