About Hawkins Field
Home to the Hawks Baseball team, Hawkins field was named after Jerry Hawkins, who coached baseball at Chowan for over 30 years. Over time the field has experienced various upgrades, making it accommodating for both the players and the fans. The upgrades include a new infield playing surface (sod and clay), and renovated batting cages. The batting cages are covered for use during inclement weather and lit for use after the sun sets. With the help of donors and labor from the baseball coaching staff, a net backstop and new bleacher style seating was completed in 2020. In 2010 a new two story press box was built just behind the home plate backstop. Over the years the coaching staff has upgraded the dugouts with custom flooring, seating, and equipment storage. The dugouts and press box were recently updated with new metal roofing. The infield playing surface and outfield is a mixture of bermuda and seasonal grasses. Bullpens are located on both the home and visitors sides. The home bullpen features three pitching stalls and bench seating while the visitor bullpen features one pitching and catching area.Â
In addition to the outdoor practice areas, the baseball team has access to an indoor batting cage on the northeast end of the Hawks Athletic Center.
