John Wheeler enters his third season with the Hawks and second as an assistant coach after spending the 2018 season as a volunteer coach.  Wheeler will handle the running backs and tight ends, as well as, the recruiting and video coordinator.

Wheeler comes to Chowan after spending nine seasons as the head coach at Currituck County High School.  During his tenure at Currituck, Wheeler led the program to 39 wins on his way to being named Northeastern Coastal Conference Coach of the Year in 2013 after winning the NCC Title in 2013.  Wheeler would earn four playoff wins during his tenure.

While at Currituck County, Wheeler coached 25 Northeastern North Carolina All-Area Players and 28 All-Northeastern Coastal Conference Players.  Currituck County made the NCHSAA playoffs five times and was earned the 2011 and 2013 District Champion title.

Prior to Currituck County, Wheeler spent a season as the Defensive Coordinator at Estero High School in Estero, Fla.  Wheeler was also the Freshman Team Head Coach leading them to five wins after the team went winless in the previous season.

Wheeler started his coaching career in 2005 at Currituck County as the Inside Linebackers coach.  Wheeler would spend three seasons. Wheeler produced two All-Conference selections.

Wheeler was a four year member of the Chowan football team from 2001-2004 as a defensive end and outside linebacker.
