WOMEN'S LACROSSE BECOMES CHOWAN'S 14TH VARSITY SPORT

MURFREESBORO - Opportunities continue to open for female students at Chowan University with the official addition of women's lacrosse for the 2012-13 academic year. Lacrosse is considered one of the nation's fastest emerging sports within high schools and colleges.
The national search for Chowan's first head coach concluded with the hiring of
Eryn McCaffrey, who is working tirelessly to assemble her first recruiting class. “I would like to thank Dennis Helsel and the rest of the Chowan Athletic staff and administration for giving me the opportunity to join the Chowan family,” said McCaffrey. “I am very excited to start the lacrosse program here. Also, a special thanks to Lyndsey Boswell (High Point) and Katie Rhodes (Detroit Mercy) for their support and guidance.”
“Starting a lacrosse program from the ground up is both challenging and rewarding,” added McCaffrey. “I am excited to bring lacrosse to Chowan, and thrilled to see the growth of the sport in North Carolina. I believe our future is bright and I look forward to going into competition in the 2012-2013 season.”
“By adding a women's team, Chowan is responding to the well-documented increase in popularity of women's lacrosse nationwide,” said Dennis Helsel, Chowan University Director of Athletics.
“This is another milestone for Chowan athletics,” he noted. “We believe women's lacrosse will help provide a broader cultural experience for those seeking to be student-athletes at Chowan University, and help balance the male/female mix of student-athletes.”
The traditional women's lacrosse season takes place during the spring, and Chowan plans to host its home games at the current soccer field.
