MURFREESBORO - Chowan University's Head Men's Basketball Coach, Dan DeRose, announced today the hiring of Brandon Chaison as a new member of his coaching staff. Chaison will serve as an assistant coach this season, working primarily with guard development. He will also assist DeRose in the Hawks recruiting efforts.
DeRose recruited and coached Chaison at Beaver County Community College in Pennsylvania for two seasons where Chaison excelled as an All-Conference and All-Region performer. Chaison finished his playing career at Seton Hill University (PA) where in his junior season he earned American Mid-East All-Conference honors.
"Brandon is probably the most intelligent and hardest working player I have coached. His high basketball IQ combined with his work ethic will make an immediate impact on the young men in our program," DeRose stated.
This is Chaison's first venture into coaching on the collegiate level. His playing experiences on both the collegiate and professional levels combined with his coaching background in the AAU ranks will help create an environment of success that DeRose is looking to create.
"Brandon was a successful player. He's a winner on and off the court and doesn't know anything but success," continued DeRose. "He's excited to get an opportunity to coach on the college level and I know he will help develop our players and our program overall."
Chaison comes to Chowan after most recently working with the Houston Independent School District as an associate teacher. Along with his teaching duties Chaison worked with the DGIB (Daniel Gibson) AAU Hoops program in Houston. He served three seasons with DGIB Hoops and was named the Houston Area AAU Coach of the Year in 2009. He also has two seasons coaching experience with the Houstonians AAU program.
After finishing his playing career at Seton Hill in 2006, Chaison spent three season playing professionally with both the USBL's Jackson Wildcats (MS) and the ABA's Houston Takers. While with the Takers he was ranked among the league's top five shooters.
The men's basketball program will embark on their second season playing in the basketball storied CIAA in November.
