FORT LEE, VA – Virginia State University took home the 2010 CIAA Team Golf Championship Friday after firing a final-round 307 to defeat Fayetteville State by nine strokes while
Corey Garvey of Chowan University came home with the individual title. The Hawks finished in 3rd place in the team competition.
Cliff Forbes shot a 77-71 to finish tied for second place.
Virginia State entered the second round with a three-shot lead over the Broncos after shooing an opening round 306. Fayetteville State's opening-round 309 was followed by a 313 for total 622 and second place.
Garvey shot a 76 in the opening round and followed that with a 71 on Friday, one of only two sub-par rounds for the tournament for a 147, three shots over par and a one-stroke victory. Garvey narrowly defeated Livingstone's Kenneth Bethea (74-74) and teammate
Cliff Forbes (76-71) who both finished four shots over par.
There were some nervous moments for Garvey after he posted his low-round of 71. The last person that could best his score was Bethea. Bethea came to the 18th hole needing a par to win or a bogey to force a playoff.
Bethea's tee shot went slightly into the woods. He blasted the ball out into a bunker next to the green. His bunker shot went over the green. Bethea chipped the ball onto the green, setting up a shot to send the tournament to a playoff. His putt was too quick, scooting past the hole which gave the individual title to Garvey.
The Chowan Hawks finished in third place with a tournament score of 642 (329-313) followed by St. Augustine's with a 664 (339-225) and Virginia Union with a 675 (330-345).
Elizabeth City State shot a two-round total of 677 (333-344) for a sixth-place finish followed by Livingstone (719, 368-351), Johnson C. Smith (778, 389-389) and St. Paul's (909, 460-449).
The 2010 All-CIAA Golf team, which consists of the top six golfers by score included:
