Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO, NC - The Chowan University baseball team split a Sunday doubleheader with Mansfield University to move to 9-15 on the season. Chowan posted 14 team hits to help propel them to a 15-4 win in the first game but but they fell short in the night cap with a 7-6 loss.
Chowan used a balanced attack of offense and pitching to pick up their 9th win of the season.
Bailey Lipscomb picked up the win after throwing six innings. He scattered five hits and struck out five to pick up his second win of the season.
Cody Smith pitched an inning of relief for the Hawks, striking out three Mountie batters.
With the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the 5th inning,
Kyle Cross blasted a bases loaded homerun to right center field to bust the tie and give Chowan a comfortable lead. The Hawks went on to post seven runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to take a 9-2 lead.
Harry Markotay plated another three runs in the Hawks next at bat with a three-run shot to left field and a 15-3 lead. The Mounties put up a run in the top of the 6th but Lipscomb got the Hawks out of the inning and set up Smith to close out the game.
The Hawks had five players garner multiple hits.
Connor Arcobasso ended game one 3-5 while
Zack Cooper,
Julian Lopez,
Jack Downum, and
Marvin Harrell Jr. collected two hits each. Harrell posted three runs and three runs batted in. Cross ended the game 1-4 with four runs batted in.
The Hawks fell short in the night cap, losing 7-6. Mansfield jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the 3rd inning before the Hawks answered. In the bottom of the 4th inning,
Robert Williams tied the game at 3-3 with a three-run blast to right center field. Mansfield busted the tie with four runs in the top of the 5th inning for a 7-3 lead. The Hawks added runs in their final three at-bats and were knocking on the door in the bottom of the seventh but Mansfield's Joseph Deperno was able to pitch his team out of a jam for the eventual 7-6 win.
Brosdahl ended game two 3-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Williams end the game 2-4 with four RBI while teammates Cooper, Arcobasso, and Harrell each added two hits.
The Hawks will host Winston-Salem State University in a four-game series March 18th and March 19th in their next outing. Both days the games will start at 1:00pm at Hawkins Field.
