Hawks Suffer Trio of Setbacks on Sunday

Tori Cragan had three hits against Millersville on Sunday.
Box Score RALEIGH, NC- The Chowan University softball team dropped three games on Sunday in the final day of the Shaw University Softball Challenge.  The Hawks fell to Columbus State 9-0, West Virginia Wesleyan 5-1 and Millersville 4-2 to contribute to an 0-5 finish at the tournament.  Chowan slips to 0-11 on the season with the losses.
 
Tori Cragan and Leigh Ward were the lone Hawks to collect hits in the first game.  The Cougars scored four runs in the bottom of the first using an RBI single to right field and a three run homerun to take a 4-0 lead.  A two-run homer to left in the bottom of the second put Columbus State ahead 6-0  and a Hawk error combined with two RBI singles secured the 9-0 win for the Cougars.  Alora Lincoln took the loss on the mound for the Hawks after surrendering nine hits and nine runs (eight earned). 
 
Lindsey DeFee earned the run for Columbus State after holding Chowan to two hits over the course of five innings.
 
In the Hawks' game against West Virginia Wesleyan, an RBII single by Tori Cragan gave Chowan a 1-0 lead in the third inning.  The Bobcats used a three-run fifth inning and a two-run homerun in the seventh to secure the 5-1 victory.  Demi Reynolds suffered the loss on the mound. 
 
Chowan concluded play on Sunday with a 4-2 loss to Millersville.  Cragan finished the game with three hits while Ward went 2-3 at the plate.  Leighanne Huggins knocked in both RBI in the loss.  Courtney Groce took the loss on the mound.

The Hawks return to action this weekend when they host UVA-Wise and West Chester.  Chowan takes on the Cavaliers on Friday at 2:00pm and hosts the Golden Rams on Sunday in a 12:00pm contest.
