PETERSBURG, VA- The Chowan University baseball team's season came to an end on Saturday afternoon with a 9-1 loss to the Winston-Salem State University Rams in the CIAA Championship game. The championship title for the Rams is their third in as many years.
Winston-Salem State grabbed a 3-0 lead in the home half of the first off an RBI double and two bases loaded walks. The Hawks responded in the top of the fourth with a run after
Evan Holton's single scored
Brandon Mack.
The Rams struck again in the fifth using Levi Grassley's RBI single and Rafael Gonzalez's sacrifice fly to extend their lead to 5-1. RBI singles from Aaron Jones, German Reyes, Tyler Hickernell, and Gonzalez along with a sacrifice fly from Grassley put Winston-Salem State ahead 9-1. The Hawks were unable to recover from the deficit.
Brandon Mack accounted for two of the Hawks' six hits in the loss. Holton,
Colby Wiggins,
Blake Leebrick and
William Ward each notched a hit in the contest for the Hawks.
Jeff Vera took the loss on the mound for the Hawks after giving up five earned runs in five innings of work.
Evan Holton,
John Hunter,
Blake Leebrick and
Ryan Moore were named to the CIAA All-Tournament Team for the Hawks.
The Hawks conclude their season with a 21-26 overall record. The Rams will advance to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional with an automatic bid and 37-9 overall mark.
