PETERSBURG, VA- The Chowan University baseball lives to see another day at Whaley Colbert Field. After falling to Winston-Salem State 8-3 in their first game, the Hawks outlasted St. Augustine's University 12-9 to oust the Falcons and remain in the CIAA Tournament.
After a scoreless first inning, the Hawks got on the board in the top of the second when
William Ward drew a bases loaded walk to give Chowan a 1-0 lead. The Rams put up two runs in the bottom of the second for a 2-1 advantage over the Hawks. Winston-Salem State added two more runs in the fourth and sixth innings for a 6-1 lead going into the seventh. Chowan generated a multi-run inning in the seventh with two runs of their own.

Drew Mason followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to bring home
Josh Catalano. The Hawks trailed 6-3 as play began in the bottom of the seventh.
Winston-Salem State responded with scores by Brandon Harrison and Paco Martin in the seventh. Those would be the last runs scored in the contest. Jordan Carlton picked up the win and Scott Wells was credited with the save for the Rams. Carlton pitched six innings and had four strikeouts.
Ryan Moore took the loss for Chowan, throwing six innings before being relieved by
Will Gurganus. Five Hawks combined for five hits in the loss.
Chowan and Saint Augustine's played the final game of the evening out of the loser's bracket. Despite playing back to back contests, the Hawks came out firing on all cylinders. Both teams went score for score until the fourth inning when Chowan plated two runs off a sacrifice fly by
Josh Catalano, and a Falcon error which allowed
Blake Leebrick to score.
With the Hawks leading 4-3, Chowan scored five runs at the top of the fifth to create some distance in the contest.

Drew Mason and
Evan Seymour hit RBI singles to make the score 7-3.
Josh Catalano capped off the inning with a two-run single to give Chowan a 9-3 advantage.
The Falcons managed to draw within one run with three runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth. But the Hawks never relinquished their lead and eventually sealed the victory by adding a run in the seventh and two runs in the eighth.
Evan Hart got the win for Chowan on the mound and
Carter Siweck earned the save. Hart pitched five innings with five strikeouts. Siweck pitched the final two innings and only allowed one hit with no runs scored.
Competition with continue on Friday, April 19
th at Whaley Colbert Field between Winston-Salem State (No. 1 seed) and Virginia State (No. 3 seed) at 11:00 am. Chowan will take on the loser of the contest at 2:00pm on the campus of Virginia State University.
