Winston-Salem State Slips Past Chowan

WINSTON-SALEM, NC- The Chowan University softball team had their 13-0 run in CIAA play snapped on Saturday afternoon after to Winston-Salem State 4-2 in a CIAA crossover match-up. The game was essentially decided in the first inning of the contest. Chowan got on the board first after Leigh Ward scored when the Lady Rams threw down to second in an attempt to catch Lacey Wildeboer stealing second. 
 
Winston-Salem State responded in the home half of the first using a passed ball, a two run single through the left side and an RBI single up the middle to pull ahead 4-1.  The Hawks added an additional run in the fifth inning when Wildeboer's sacrifice fly scored Shelby Pendleton
 
Chowan slips to 20-21 on the season and 13-1 in CIAA play, while Winston-Salem State improves to 26-17 overall and 15-1 in the league.  Courtney Groce took the loss on the mound for the Hawks.  She scattered nine hits over the course of six innings, and surrendered three earned runs to the Lady Rams.  Brittany Lane picked up the win for Winston-Salem after holding the Hawks to five hits. 
 
Kelly Hardison, Liz Hipple, Pendleton, Ward, and Wildeboer each notched a hit for Chowan on Saturday.  Monet Daly paced the Lady Rams with a 3-3 effort, and Andreya O'Brien was a perfect 2-2 at the plate.
 
The Hawks travel to Richmond, VA on Sunday to take on Virginia Union University in a critical CIAA Northern Division match-up.
