MOUNT OLIVE, NC- The Chowan University baseball team dropped two games on the road against #4 Mount Olive College on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks fell 9-5 to the Trojans in the first game before taking a 10-3 loss in the nightcap.
The Hawks got on the board first in the contest after
John Hunter's single to short scored
Josh Catalano who had reached on a single to right center in the top of the first inning. Chowan built a 5-0 lead in the top of the second after plating four runs off a two run double from
Drew Mason, an RBI single from Hunter, and a line out from
Evan Holton which scored
Ryan Moore.
The Trojans scored two runs in the home half of the second off an RBI single and a sacrifice fly. Mount Olive shut out the Hawks offensively through the remainder of the contest and battled back with a seven run fifth inning to earn the 9-5 victory.
Brian Vincent took the loss on the mound for the Hawks in the first game. Hunter was 3-4 at the plate with two RBI, followed by Catalano who was 2-4.
Drew Mason knocked in two RBI in the loss.
Mason hit an RBI single in the top of the first game of the second contest, and later scored on a passed ball to give Chowan an early 2-0 advantage. Mount Olive knotted the game 2-2 in the home half of the first with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single.
The Trojans scored in the third, fourth and fifth to build a commanding 10-2 lead over the Hawks. Catalano's RBI single gave the Hawks an additional run in the top of the seventh, but the damage was done and Mount Olive picked up the 10-3 win.
Austin McGhee earned the loss on the mound in the nightcap. Chowan falls to 12-23 after Wednesday's loss while #4 Mount Olive improves to 28-4. The Hawks will take the field again this weekend as they travel to Petersburg, VA for a three game series against the Virginia State Trojans.
