Chowan Earns Split in CIAA Play against Winston-Salem State

Josh Catalano was 4-8 on Saturday against the Rams.
MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University baseball team split a twinbill with the Rams of Winston-Salem State on Saturday afternoon in CIAA play.  The Hawks handed the Rams their first CIAA loss of the season after winning the opening game of the series 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth before falling 16-2 in the nightcap.      

Winston-Salem State took an early lead in the first contest.  Aaron Jones gave the Rams their first run in the inning with an RBI double, and a bases loaded walk and two-run single allowed Winston-Salem to take a quick 4-0 advantage.
Colby Wiggins responded for the Hawks in the bottom of the second with a single to left field to score Evan Holton.  Chowan plated two additional runs in the home half of the third after a sacrifice fly from Drew Mason, and a run-down between first and second which allowed Tyler Burden to score.

The score remained locked 4-3 until the bottom of the sixth.  Josh Catalano and Drew Mason started off the frame with back-to-back singles.  With Catalano on third, Evan Hunter bunted allowing Catalano to score and knot the game 4-4.  An RBI single from Aaron Jones for Winston-Salem State in the top of the seventh game the Rams the go-ahead run. 
The Hawks continued to battle through the seventh, after an RBI single from Tyler Burden tied the game once more.  With the score tied 5-5, both teams failed to score in the eighth.  Carter Siweck held the Rams at-bay in the top of the ninth. 

Chowan had the last word in the decision.  With the bases loaded for the Hawks, Evan Holton secured the 6-5 win after punching a base hit through the left side to score Anthony Waldner

Ryan Moore pitched 6.1 innings for Chowan before being relieved by Siweck, who earned the win for the Hawks.  Michael Drye took the loss on the mound for the Rams.  Josh Catalano paced the Hawks going 3-5 in the first contest.  Evan Holton had the game-winning hit for Hawks, knocked in two RBI in the win and went 2-4 at the plate.  Colby Wiggins and Anthony Waldner also collected two hits in the victory.

The Rams used a two-run first inning to take an early lead in the night cap after RBI ground-outs from German Reyes and Aaron Jones.   Winston-Salem plated an additional run in the top of the fourth to pull ahead 3-0. 
A sacrifice fly from Travis Moore pushed a fourth run across for the Rams in the top of the sixth.  Winston-Salem State took advantage of a Hawk error in the same inning to score two more runs for a 6-0 lead.  German Reyes followed up with a homerun to extend the Rams' lead to 7-0. 

Winston-Salem State went to work in the top of the seventh, plating nine runs off six hits and two errors to build a commanding 16-0 advantage.  Brandon Mack doubled to center in the bottom of the seventh for the Hawks to score Keaton Scales and Will Gurganus making the score 16-2.    

Jordan Carlton picked up his third win on the season for the Rams, throwing a complete game against the Hawks. 
George Mazza took the loss for Chowan in the nightcap. 

Chowan will have another shot at Winston-Salem on Sunday when they take on the Rams in a nine inning game.  First pitch is slated for 12:00pm.
