MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University baseball team battled but could not avoid the weekend sweep against St. Augustine's University. The Hawks fell to the Falcons 10-7 in a nine inning contest on Sunday afternoon. Chowan falls to 7-15 overall and 3-3 in CIAA play after Sunday's loss. With the win, St. Augustine's improves to 14-8 and 6-0 in league play.
Evan Hart started for the Hawks on the mound fanning eight Falcons four en-route to a no decision on the mound. Hart pitched 5.1 innings giving up six runs (four earned) off eight hits and two walks. St. Augustine's Desmond Cheek picked up the win, throwing six innings in the victory. Cheek surrendered six runs (three earned) off 11 hits while striking out four and allowing three walks.
Tyler Burden picked up the loss pitching in-relief giving up three runs in the eighth inning. Falcon reliever Pat Hall picked up the save throwing the final three innings giving up one run and striking out five.
Chowan jumped on the board first in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead after
Drew Mason scored on a passed ball in the Hawks' first at-bat.
St. Augustine's would tie things up in the top of the second inning with a lead-off triple by Carey Cheek. Clarence Peace drove Cheek in with a RBI ground out to knot the game 1-1.
Chowan exploded offensively in the bottom of the third after starting out the inning with three consecutive hits.
Tyler Burden started the inning with a single up the middle followed up by
Josh Catalano's single to left field. Burden and Catalano would put themselves into scoring position with a double steal.
Ryan Moore doubled to left field to continue the rally. Moore stole third and later scored on a RBI ground out to take a 4-1 advantage.
St. Augustine's would cut the deficit to one in the top of the fifth inning as they capitalized on a Hawk error to make the score 4-3.
The Falcons stuck again in the top of the sixth inning after a double to center from Clarence Peace to tie the game 4-4. Sterling James singled to left field to take the lead to give St. Augustine's the go-ahead run. Calvin Butcher singled to shortstop to extend the lead to 6-4, and a wild pitch scored another giving the Falcons a 7-4 advantage.
Chowan clawed their way back in the bottom of the sixth scoring two runs off three hits. Josh Catlano and
Tyler Burden each collected RBI's in the inning.
St. Augustine's took advantage of passed balls and a Hawks miscue to tack on three more runs in the top of the eighth inning to extend their lead to 10-6.

Brandon Mack's sacrifice fly bringing in
Colby Wiggins for a 10-7 deficit.

Colby Wiggins and
Josh Martin collected two hits apiece in the loss.
Evan Holton,
Brandon Mack, and
Ryan Moore had one hit apiece.
Chowan takes a step away from league play on Thursday, March 14
th to take on University of Virginia-Lynchburg in a nonconference double-header at Hawkins Field. First pitch is slated for 1:00pm.
