KING, NC- The Chowan University baseball team picked up an 8-4 win on Sunday afternoon against Fairmont State University in the CIAA/WVIAC Challenge.
George Mazza started the game on the mound for the Hawks and threw five innings in the contest.
Jeff Vera came in in-relief of Mazz and closed out the final three innings to earn the win.
The Hawks scored in the first inning when
Drew Mason's single knocked in
Josh Catalano to give Chowan an early 1-0 lead. The Hawks struck again in the third when
Tyler Burden scored off an RBI single from
Justin Shockley.
With Chowan leading 2-1 in the fifth, the Fighting Falcons made things interesting with a two-out, bases loaded double to grab the 4-2 advantage.
Brett Allen's two-run double scored Burden and Mason to knot the game 4-4.
Shockley and
Colby Wiggins each drew bases loaded walks to give the Hawks a two-run advantage over Fairmont State. Mason added the final blow with a two-out double to score two RBI to secure the 8-4 victory.

The Hawks improve to 4-10 on the season after Sunday's win. They return to Murfreesboro to host Barton College on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader. First-pitch is slated for 1:00pm.
