PEMBROKE, NC – The Chowan University baseball team dropped a pair of games to #17 UNC-Pembroke on Tuesday afternoon at Sammy Cox field. The Hawks fell 8-2 in the opening game of the doubleheader and lost 7-5 in the nightcap.
The Braves' two out rally put UNC-Pembroke ahead 3-0 after a combination of singles and walks in the home half of the first inning during the first game. A lead-off double in the bottom of the second and a passed ball led to the Braves plating an additional run to gain a 3-0 advantage over the Hawks.
Chowan answered back in their next at-bat.
Colby Wiggins started the inning off with a single through the left side, and
Brandon Mack singled up the middle to set the stage for
Drew Mason. Mason knocked in Wiggins with a single to the right side to put the Hawks on the board.
Max Ganon led off the bottom of the second double to right center, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on the next play to earn the 4-1 lead over the Hawks. Gagnon singled to left field in the home half of the third to score Brett Huffman, giving the Braves a 5-1 lead.
Chowan used a Braves' error in the top of the fourth to score
Evan Seymour and make the score 5-2. UNC-Pembroke plated three more runs during the contest to grab the 8-2 win over the Hawks.
George Mazza took the loss on the mound for the Hawks in the first game.
Tyler Burden,
Evan Holton, Mason, and Seymour each went 2-4 in the loss.
The Braves slipped past the Hawks in the nightcap of the twinbill. Down 1-0 in the top of the second inning, the Hawks exploded to score five runs to take a 5-1 run lead. Burden opened the inning with a double to right center, followed by an RBI single from Wiggins to put the Hawks on the board.
Brett Allen singled in his at-bat to spark an offensive rally allowing Chowan to take the lead.
With two outs in the inning,
Josh Catalano singled to center to score Wiggins.
Brandon Mack moved Catalano and Allen over with a single to right to load the bases. Mason drew the bases load walk to score. An RBI single from
Justin Shockley pushed the Hawks' lead to 4-1. Mack scored on a Braves' error to allow the Hawks to take a 5-1 lead.
UNC-Pembroke responded in the home half of the second by plating two runs. A Hawk error in the bottom of the third allowed the Braves to pull within one run of Chowan. Derrick Phillips tripled to left field to score Jordan Edgerton and Daniel Fraga, allowing UNC-Pembroke to move ahead 6-5 in the bottom of the fourth. An RBI single for the Braves in the sixth secured the 7-5 victory.
Brian Vincent took the loss for Chowan on the mound, while Patrick McMahon picked up the win for UNC-Pembroke.
UNC-Pembroke remains undefeated with an 8-0 record after Tuesday's victory while the Hawks slide to 2-9. Chowan hits the road this weekend for the CIAA/WVIAC Challenge in King, NC. They take on West Liberty University at 4:00 pm on February 15
th.
