FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Chowan University volleyball picked up another win on Sunday morning after defeating the Shaw University Bears at the CIAA Round-Up.
With the win, Chowan moves to 11-5 overall on the 2012 season and 9-1 in CIAA play.
Karina Monroe led the Hawks with eight kills in the match.
Nikira Fults chipped in six kills, and
Monica Ruffin had five kills in the win.
Callie Armistead guided the Hawks to the 3-0 win after collecting 23 assists. Chowan was dominate over the Bears, winning the sets 25-12, 25-13 and 25-9 respectively.
The Hawks jumped to a quick lead in the first set, scoring off of the Bears' attack errors and two service aces by
Monica Ruffin. Chowan led by as many as 14 points at one time in the set before capturing the 25-12 win thanks to consistent play from
Nikira Fults and
Monica Ruffin.
Shaw took an early 3-0 lead in set two until a kill by
Nikira Fults swung the momentum back to the Hawks. With the Hawks trailing 3-1,
Monica Ruffin had three consecutive service aces to tie the game give the Hawks a 4-3 lead. The Bears struggled after that point, making three attack errors to give the Hawks a 7-3 lead. The Hawks took control from there, cruising to a 25-13 victory and did not trail for the rest of the set or the match.
Chowan jumped ahead 3-0 in set three and maintained control for the entire set.
April Wolfe stepped up in the third set with some key kills for the Hawks, allowing Chowan to win 25-9.
The Hawks return home on October 7th to host Bowie State University. Match time is set for 6:00 pm.
