Hawks' Win Streak Snapped by Barton

Callie Armistead had 52 assists in Wednesday's match.
WILSON, NC- The Chowan University volleyball team dropped a 2-3 decision at Barton College on Wednesday afternoon.  Until Wednesday's loss, the Hawks had won the last six straight contests.   The Hawks and the Bulldogs met earlier this season and Chowan grabbed the victory, but this time it was Barton that picked up the win.

Chowan's Nikira Fults, Karina Monroe, and Monrica Ruffin each picked up 15 kills in the loss.  Callie Armistead tallied a match-high 52 assists and Cindy Ehrich scooped up a match-best 31 digs.

The Hawks trailed the entire first set before eventually falling 22-25.  Despite a solid offensive effort from Chowan, Barton's Jillian Sherman and Kati Wood proved to be difficult for the Hawks to handle.

Chowan rallied back to take the second and third sets 25-21 and 25-20.  Trailing 1-2 in the second set, Chowan took advantage of a service error from Barton and used a few key kills from Monroe to regain the momentum.  They led for the remainder of the set.  The Hawks were able to maintain the lead for the entire third set thanks to an offensive attack led by Fults, Monroe, and Ruffin and several Barton errors.

Despite grabbing the second and third sets, the Hawks were unable to build off that momentum in the fourth and fifth sets 18-25 and 11-15. Barton led Chowan for the remainder of the match, with Jillian Sherman and Kati Wood leading the squad with 19 and 14 kills respectively.

Barton sits at 4-9 on the 2012 season after Wednesday's win, and 2-3 in the Conference Carolinas.  The Hawks stand 9-4 on the season, and 6-0 in CIAA play.  They head to Fayetteville, NC this weekend to compete in the CIAA Round-Up.
