Chowan Remains Perfect in CIAA Play

After Sunday's win, Chowan remains undefeated in CIAA play.
MURFREESBORO-  The Chowan University volleyball team swept the Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams 3-0 on Sunday morning in their final game of the CIAA Round-Up.

Chowan moves to 7-3 on the 2012 season after the win, and remains perfect in CIAA play with a 5-0 conference record.

Karina Monroe led the way again for the Hawks' offense after collecting 11 kills in the win.  Monica Ruffin chipped in eight kills to contribute to a team total of 32 kills in the match.  Callie Armistead had 19 of the team's 23 assists to guide the offense.

Chowan trailed the Lady Rams early in the first set until Nikira Fults got the Hawks on the board with her first kill of the set.  Monica Ruffin had two consecutive service aces to tie the set at 3-3.

Chowan would gain a 12-6 lead mid-way through the set, collecting six consecutive points off a combination of Lady Rams' attack errors and kills from Karina Monroe.   The Hawks remained in control for the remainder of the set cruising to a 25-22 victory.

CU quickly jumped ahead 6-1 in the second set, with Monica Ruffin, Karina Monroe, and Brianna Smith leading the offensive attack.  The Hawks had the lead through out the entire second set with the Lady Rams staying close behind until Chowan rallied to pull ahead 19-12 after scoring five consecutive points from a combination of kills from Monroe, and Lady Rams' attack errors.  The Hawks took the second set of the match with a 25-19 final score.

The third set started much like the first with Chowan quickly pulling ahead 9-1.  Winston-Salem State tried to catch-up, but only managed to get within six points of the Hawks before dropping the 25-16 decision.

Chowan hosts Elizabeth City State University on September 20th in a CIAA Northern Division match-up.  Match time is set for 6:00pm.
