MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University Volleyball team picked up two more CIAA Northern Division wins on Saturday after defeating Livingstone College and Johnson C. Smith University.
The Hawks defeated the Blue Bears 0-3, handing them their first loss of the season. Scores from the match were 25-18, 26-16 and 25-15.
Karina Monroe had another solid game in the front row for the Hawks as she tallied 10 kills in the match. Monroe also collected four of the team's nine service aces in the victory. The first set was closely played between both teams until late in the set. With the score at 14-13 in favor of the Hawks,

Nikira Fults up for the kill to shift the momentum back to Chowan. The Hawks rallied to score five consecutive points to pull the lead to 19-13.
The Blue Bears fell short of the comeback and the Hawks took set one 25-18.
Chowan quickly fell behind 0-6 in the second set. They failed to regain the lead until
April Wolfe had a key kill off the assist from Armistead to lead the Hawks to six consecutive points. From that point on, Chowan maintained the lead throughout the remainder of the set to eventually win 25-16.
Chowan controlled the majority of the third set in the first match maintaining the lead the entire time.
Karina Monroe finished the match with 10 kills and four aces followed by
Nikira Fults with seven kills.
Callie Armistead led the Hawks with 34 assists.
Cindy Ehrich held down the defense in the back row with 17 digs.
The Hawks continued their winning ways in the next match with a 3-0 victory over Johnson C. Smith.
Karina Monroe tallied a staggering 21 kills in the win.
Callie Armistead added another 41 assists in the contest.
The scores from the match against Johnson C. Smith were 25-11, 25-11 and 25-16. Throughout the entire three sets the Hawks trailed the Lady Golden Bulls just one time.
In the first set, the Hawks shared the wealth in the offensive attack with
Karina Monroe,
Nikira Fults, and
April Wolfe contributing to the majority of the kill count. Chowan kept rolling in the second and third sets to easily defeat the Lady Golden Bulls.
The Hawks put the Lady Golden Bulls away in the second set thanks to five consecutive points late in the set to take Chowan to a 20-9 lead. JCSU would make the score 20-10 after the kill from LaQwesha Gamble, but the Hawks were able to earn the serve back to rally the score to 24-10 before eventually winning the match 25-11.
The Hawks maintained the lead throughout the entire third set, surrendering only 16 points to JCSU.
Karina Monroe continued to put on an offensive show in the third match to guide her team to the 25-16 win, and their fourth consecutive CIAA Northern Division win.
The Hawks move to 6-3 overall and 4-0 in CIAA play after Saturday's wins. They return to action on Sunday to take on the Winston-Salem State University Rams at 9:00am.
