MURFREESBORO – Amber Matthews crushed a three-run home run and Allie Kolezynski pitched a gem in a doubleheader sweep of Mercyhurst University on Friday.  Chowan (2-4) won by scores of 7-6 and 1-0.  The Lakers fall to 2-2 on the season.

Matthews belted her first home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning of game one to put Chowan ahead 7-6, a score that would hold up for the remainder of the game.  Each team had big first innings, as the Lakers held a 4-3 advantage after one.

Mercyhurst went up 6-4 in the top of the fifth with a home run to deep centerfield.  In the home half of the inning, Lacey Wildeboer and Liz Hipple each singled, setting up Matthews' homer.  Alora Lincoln (1-4) closed the deal from there on the mound.  She threw a complete game, allowing 12 hits and striking out six.

Wildeboer and Hipple each recorded two runs and two hits.  Matthews also had an RBI in the first inning, giving her four for the game.

Game two was dominated by pitching, as a total of nine hits were recorded between both teams.  Kolezynski (1-0) went the distance, giving up five hits and striking out four.  For the Lakers, Annie Truelove pitched all six innings, surrendering just four hits while striking out two.

Chowan struck in the home half of the fourth inning, when Megan Wade belted a single down the left field line, scoring Wildeboer.  Wildeboer got into scoring position by stealing second base earlier in the inning.

Kolezynski, Alex Allen, and Kayla Brady had the other hits for Chowan.

Chowan will return to action tomorrow, February 11th, when they host Anderson University (SC) in a non-conference doubleheader.  First pitch is set for 12:00 noon at the Hawks Softball Complex.
